Here I will take a look at different artists views on music streaming and try and dissect them to create a general understanding of how it affects different artists at different points in their career, because it does. For mainstream artists, like Taylor Swift and Jay-Z, they can afford to lose money to music streaming because they are able to easily go out and make money through other endeavors with the security that their fans will follow. However with smaller artists signed to smaller labels, such as Every Avenue and Hit the Lights, don't have the same type of following and their label isn't able to compensate for the lack of revenue that streaming takes away from them, leaving them needing to tour, but even falling short financially there. Then there are artists who don't have labels, like Zoe Keating, who has been outspoken on how music streaming is impossible to make a living from as an unsigned artist.
