Unsigned artists are fighting to stay alive in the conversation of how music streaming is effecting musicians. Artists like Zoe Keating have been more than outspoken about their opinions on the subject, talking to the New York Times and other magazines extensively about the issue. In one article, she stated that in 2013, she made $1,764.18 from plays on Spotify in total, based on the just over 400,000 plays on her music on the site. Keating argues that even though people are specifically going to her page and searching out her music, especially since she is a classical cellist something that not many people would be searching for to begin with, it's incredible she's getting those kind of plays to begin with. However, the amount of money she's making from Spotify clearly isn't enough for her to continue with her craft, and the market for her to tour is practically non-existent. This leaves her, and many niche and unsigned artists in the same position, they're unable to tour because no one will come out to the shows and therefore they can't make money through that, and even if they are able to get people to stream they're music, they aren't able to make enough money through that medium to sustain themselves even though no label is getting a portion of it.
