Streaming music has become the the new to listen to music in the technologically advanced world. These streaming services have grown rapidly over the last few years, with little to no concern for paying for the music because it’s available for free (Giletti). Websites like Spotify, or even YouTube, are finding themselves more popular than iTunes or physical CDs, which requires fans to pay actual money even though they’re all technically legal (DangNguyen, Dejean, Moreau). Legal streaming, however does lead to legal purchasing, but in small scales, and the impacts are not being seen in high enough numbers (Aguiar, Martens). That being said, illegal music is still occurring even though music streaming is widely available, and it’s ruining the music industry with every click (Goel, Miesing, Chandra). Musicians have now taken to social media to gain extensive followings that are willing to support them monetarily in order to help them support themselves (Bourreau, Maillard, Moreau).
Currently, the state of the music industry is dismal. It’s at it’s lowest point, and a lot of that has to do with music streaming. Artists’ are the ones suffering the most from that because listeners no longer feel the need to pay for music because it has become so readily available online. While some musicians are able to find ways around this, through touring and social media, most musicians are unable to make a living through music anymore because of the way people devalue music.
For this research, I’m going to gather research on exactly how musicians are effected by the state of the music industry. A lot of research is focused solely on how it effects the music industry as a whole, both musicians and labels. By doing this, I’ll be clarifying the need for the continuing to purchasing music even though it’s available for free through streaming or there needs to be a change to the way musicians are paid through streaming mediums.
